Services

  • MLD stimulates lymphatic flow and directs fluid out of an affected area and into well draining areas that are functioning normally. MLD utilises a specialised massage technique of gentle, rhythmic, skin-stretching movements that can also soften hardened (fibrotic) tissue.

At The Lymphoedema Lounge we also utilise the LTU-904 Low Level Laser in treatment. The Laser device helps soften fibrotic tissues, reduce swelling, and positively influence skin texture and thickness.

The LTU-904 is the only laser device cleared by the FDA for lymphoedema treatment.

  • Compression therapy helps to reduce swelling and control lymphoedema in the long-term. Depending on the type of fluid present, compression bandages or garments may be prescribed.

Compression is graduated, which means the highest degree of compression is at the wrist or ankle, with pressure gradually decreasing up the limb. This helps trapped fluid (lymph) flow back into lymph vessels and drain out of congested areas. Compression also acts as an additional force for muscles to work against, pumping fluid away.

  • Scars are a natural part of the body’s healing process. However, they can become tight, sensitive and raised. Early scar treatment is essential post surgery. We will show you various techniques to help manage the scar and utilise the LTU-904 Low Level Laser to assist with scar healing.

  • Cording refers to a rope- or cord-like structure that can develop under the skin at the axilla (armpit) post breast cancer surgery that involves the removal of lymph nodes. It may extend down the arm and in some circumstances to the wrist.

You may notice a sharp pain in the axilla, typically when the arm is stretched or raised above shoulder height. It can become thick and visible, restricting movement in the arm.

Cording can be treated with therapy!

  • Exercise is an important component in managing lymphoedema as it engages your muscles, increasing the movement of fluid through the lymphatic system. It can also help maintain a healthy weight and reduce swelling.

At The Lymphoedema Lounge we will prescribe stretches and exercises to help you regain movement and strength post surgery.

Hannah can also design a Pilates Program, suitable for you, that focuses on form, stretch and strengthening safely post surgery ~12 weeks post-op.

Small group classes can be arranged on request.

  • Lipoedema occurs almost exclusively in women. However, the cause remains unknown. Experts suspect that hormones play a role as the condition typically triggers at puberty, during pregnancy, following gynaecological surgery, and around the time of menopause.

Lipoedema is a chronic and progressive disorder characterised by abnormal distributions of adipose tissue. There is a symmetrical increase in fat under the skin and has nothing to do with being overweight. The increased accumulation of fat cells cannot be reduced by calorie reduction.

    Signs and symptoms:

    • Bilateral and symmetrical tissue enlargement (without involvement of the hands and feet)

    • Pain and extreme sensitivity when pressure is applied on the affected areas

    • Swelling and feeling of heaviness

    • Easily bruise

    • Altered skin appearance, temperature and texture

    • Changes in gait, limited mobility and muscle weakness

    Treatment includes:

    • Manual lymphatic drainage to reduce swelling by assisting venous and lymphatic return

    • Compression garment wear to reduce discomfort, aching and heaviness and improve movement my smoothing distorted limb shapes

    • Exercise and skin care
